Is there anywhere legal to leave a dead car in Flossmoor?
Inside a garage, mostly. Flossmoor bans street parking from 3 to 6 a.m., keeps cars off grass and gravel, and treats a car that can’t run as a nuisance whenever the public can see it, tarp or no tarp. Cash For Junk Cars Chicago Smart Tow Inc tows it free from the driveway, pays you at pickup, and same-day pickup is often possible.
The offer works the way we buy junk cars everywhere: no deadline on it, no towing charge, and payment in cash or by Zelle or Cash App before the car leaves. What’s particular to Flossmoor is a village code that spells out where a car may wait, and for how long.
Flossmoor at a glance, for a junk car
- Every street in the village is closed to parking from 3 to 6 a.m., every day (§ 270-5-7).
- Parking on any unimproved surface is banned, and so is parking on a parkway or a sidewalk (§ 270-5-9 and § 270-5-2(J)).
- A tarp over an inoperable vehicle doesn’t take it out of public view (§ 270-9-2).
- About 95% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and 82% are detached single-family houses (ACS 2020-2024, tables B25003 and B25024).
- No interstate, US or IL-numbered route runs inside the village limits (OpenStreetMap).
Six snow routes and a stalled car
Six streets carry Flossmoor’s snow emergency signs: Central Drive, Flossmoor Road between Governors Highway and Dixie Highway, Hawthorne Lane, Leavitt Avenue, Park Drive and Sterling Avenue (§ 270-6-8). Once 2 inches is down, a route stays closed to parking until it’s been cleared curb to curb (§ 270-6-2).
For a dead car, § 270-6-3 matters most: one that stalls on a snow route has to be towed or pushed off right away. Away from the routes, § 270-5-2(M) bans parking on any village street once 2 inches has fallen, until the plow has been through.
So a dead car at the curb in January is a problem waiting for a forecast. If it can be pushed into the driveway, do that. If it can’t, that’s the week to send the car’s details.
When the village calls a car inoperable
Flossmoor’s definition is mechanical. Under § 270-9-6, a vehicle is inoperable when its engine, wheels or other parts have been removed or altered for at least seven days, so that it can’t run under its own power. Keep one in public view, on the street or on private land, and § 270-9-1 makes it a nuisance.
After that the process is short. Police give notice, the owner has to remove the car, and if it’s still there seven days later the police can take it, with the bill going to the car’s owner or the property owner (§ 270-9-3 and § 270-9-4). The exemptions in § 270-9-7 are narrow: vehicles kept inside a building, and operable historic vehicles more than 25 years old.
The street has a 24-hour line as well. A car that can’t be driven, or that hasn’t moved for 24 hours and looks abandoned, falls under § 270-8-1, and before a tow the owner gets a certified letter, a tow notice sticker and seven days to ask for a hearing (§ 270-8-3 and § 270-8-4).
Driveways, two permit courts and a 5-hour limit
More than four Flossmoor homes in five are detached houses, so most junk cars here are sitting in a driveway or a garage. About one home in eight is in a building of five or more units; if your car is in a condo or apartment lot, clear the pickup with management and tell us where it’s parked.
A few more street rules shape the rest:
- Weekday parking on residential streets is limited to 5 hours between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. (§ 270-5-3(A)).
- Embassy Row and Imperial Court are resident and guest permit parking only (§ 270-5-10).
- Alleys are for loading and unloading, with 10 feet kept clear (§ 270-5-2(L)), so an alley isn’t a place for a car to wait.
- Parking a car on the street to show it for sale is banned (§ 270-5-4).
The truck comes in on Governors Highway, Dixie Highway, Flossmoor Road, Kedzie, Western, Vollmer Road or Crawford Avenue. On papers, tell us what you have, whether that’s the title, a registration card, a bill of sale or an insurance card. Illinois law decides which of those will do for a scrap sale, and we confirm it with you on the call; the paperwork guide explains the background.
Over the village line
Country Club Hills borders Flossmoor on the north. Chicago Heights meets the village on the southeast, with Dixie Highway running between the two, and its page also covers Homewood, the neighbor that shares Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Past Hazel Crest, another Flossmoor neighbor, is Markham. Anywhere else, check every town we cover.
Flossmoor: pickup questions
Can I keep a dead car under a tarp in my Flossmoor driveway?
Not for long. Section 270-9-2 says a tarp doesn't take an inoperable vehicle out of public view, and once police give notice the car can be removed seven days later, with the car's owner or the property owner paying. Keeping it inside a building is the exemption.
What happens if my car stalls on a Flossmoor snow route?
Section 270-6-3 says it has to be towed or pushed off the route right away. The six routes, including Central Drive, Leavitt Avenue and part of Flossmoor Road, close to parking once 2 inches of snow has fallen.
Does an old car get an exemption in Flossmoor?
Only if it runs. Section 270-9-7 exempts operable historic vehicles over 25 years old, plus vehicles kept inside a building. An old car that can't move under its own power gets no pass.
